Piedmont District Recognition Biking the Scout Law: Pack 360 into the Great North Territory:
On January 20, 28 Scouts of all Cub ranks participated in Pack 360’s Klondike Derby. This first-time event was a tremendous success and allowed the Scouts the opportunity to work with all ranks as they were broken down into teams composed of Tigers, Bob Cats Wolves, Bears and Webelos I & II’s. Each of the five teams were assigned a sled containing survival materials such as a tarp and rope for shelter construction, water for hydration and logs to build a fire for the end of the day weenie roast. The teams rotated through the five stations consisting of sling shoot, team building log walk, Blue Ridge Snapper fishing, shelter building and an Amazing Race survival course which required the teams to locate and treat an injured person while working thought a wilderness course. The Scouts and leaders had a great day in 20 degree weather and enjoyed the hot dogs and chili cooked over the open fire. Many parents commented that they had thought to stay at home due to the weather but felt that the excitement and learning opportunity provided to the boys was well worth a little exposure to the Bedford tundra. As always, the parental participation was excellent which allows for such wonder events for the pack.
