Mountain Man Adventure is a provisional program run out of Camp Ottari. As a provisional program, adult leaders are not required.

Participants will experience life of the 18th Century Mountain Man while camping in the backwoods for the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Scouts will live and dress like the Mountain Men of yore.

You will learn the ways of the longhunters that explored, trapped, and settled western Virginia.

Scouts will experience the tools used by Mountain Men like tomahawks, knives, muzzleloaders, and leatherworking.

You will learn to start fires with flint and steel on which you'll cook some of your meals.

At the Blacksmith forge you'll make a hunting knife of your own.

Don't forget to visit the Ordinary for root beer and mountain music

The Hornaday Awards are the premier conservation awards in Scouting. The Hornaday Silver Medal is the rarest award in Scouting, with only a half a dozen awarded nationally each year compared to 50,000 Eagle ranks. Scouts who wish to earn a Hornaday award earn Merit Badges or Venturing Ranger award requirements and complete several large conservation projects. These projects are meant for the Scout to become an expert in conservation and are held to the standard of a conservation professional. Projects are typically three times longer and much more complicated than Eagle projects and generally take six months to a year to complete. The results are rewarding; Scouts become true conservation professionals and have earned an achievement that is truly distinguished.
